CANARIE and Viewtrak announce $1.26 M project

50/50 cost sharing for E-business technology development

May 15, 2003

Edmonton, AB, May 13, 2003 - CANARIE and Viewtrak Technologies Inc. announce a $1.26 -million development project in E-business technology that will aid cattle production and marketing for Canadian small and medium sized operations. This innovation is underway with a 50/50 cost sharing agreement between CANARIE and Viewtrak.

The development project will extend the Viewtrak's beef cattle application services to both ends of the supply chain. Producers will be able to gain access to animal data at any time during its history. This will allow for improvement in production practices, selection of superior genetics, and reduce duplication of treatments. It will provide a complete audit trail and mechanism to support source verification and traceability claims to access export markets.

Canada exports greater than fifty percent of its cattle output. The system will be fully compliant with the requirements of United States mandated Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) for food products and will also meet European Union import requirements. It also facilitates the marketing of beef cattle with special production attributes as part of retail branded programs.

"Canadian beef and other agricultural products currently enjoy high levels of marketplace acceptance around the world. Viewtrak will be able to more quickly expand its service offering to Canadian ranchers to maintain and grow markets for Canadian beef," says Jake Burlet, President & CEO of Viewtrak. "Viewtrak is focused upon increasing the competitiveness and sustainability of producers with a delivery model that allows them to participate regardless of size."

"Viewtrak will benefit small and medium sized producers by allowing them to participate, at low cost of entry, in large beef supply chain initiatives," commented Andrew Bjerring, President and CEO of CANARIE. "This is exactly the objective of the E-business Program: developing new technology and networking tools which enable SMEs to become more productive and efficient through the use of E-business models".
